For over a hundred years, the heart of our city hasn’t just beaten—it’s pulsed to a rhythm. Join us for a high-energy journey through time, tracing the evolution of the music scene from the stiff collars of formal dance halls to the sweat-soaked rock gigs and smoky underground cabarets of the 1960s, then on to the modern world of nightclubs and music bars. We’ll explore how shifting laws and cultural revolutions shaped the sounds of the city, and how the music, in turn, changed us forever.
Gareth Shute writes regularly for the NZ music history website Audioculture | Iwi Waiata and is also the author of six books, including the recent work: Songs From The Shaky Isles: A Short History of Popular Music In New Zealand. He is also a musician, who has played everywhere from the scummiest dive bars on K Rd through to the stage of the iconic Powerstation.
